Love that Iw is getting bigger n better, but I thought the main goal was to keep it small, to concentrate on having a few bands that you can focus on? I'm confused at this and hope that the small time feel doesn't get the bands lost like big labels do? In ITYTKM, kiefer said we will not have more than a couple bands signed, to keep it focused, does this loose focus with all the new bands? I just would hate to see the bands that we love and promote get lost in the mix..

sharie...i was wondering the same things that you are. universal republic seems to be a very large label, with quite a number of high profile artists.
i dont know much of anything about the music industry, but i love the concept upon which ironworks was founded...allowing artists to make the records that they want to make, and not being pushed one way or another by a large label.
i would love to hear from someone "in the know" about how this partnering will work and what, if any impact it will have on the creative freedom that is the hallmark of ironworks.

I think it is a good move. The bigger label will help the IW artist to have more recognition.

it will also give each artist less time and then they will start getting pushed into making records, like tellthetruth said..

I think it is a good move. The bigger label will help the IW artist to have more recognition. That depends....depends on whether the artist can put something out that Joe Public (not just a handful of fans) wants to hear. Major labels care about profits, bottom line....not sitting around a couple of years waiting on an album (especially when the artist isnt technically established yet) Good or bad remains to be seen seeing as the details of this arent being put out. If its a distribution deal, great...distribution is definately not a cheap or easy thing. If its a lot more than that, kiss the original mission statement that was sold to everyone bye bye. Its a wait n see thing at this point.... Just makes me glad Ron made the move he did, when he did seeing the climate at this label is changing (my perception).

maybe IW was finding it difficult to push their artists and get them recognized without a bigger network behind them. would be nice to hear more about the merger and maybe we will in the future. Seems like Kiefer and Jude are all about putting the artist first and i cant see that changing. Ron Sexsmith? Im sure he did what he thought was comfortable for him dont know that he is making any more waves now than he did with IW.

Well fishey...we will have to disagree on your Ron point...lot more waves have been made. Not sure where your looking but if you compare what was put on about his last album and what is being put out and continues to be put out with his current release....big difference. Huge difference with the labels in experience and attitude and I agree, Ron made a good choice for himself. BUT, this thread isnt about that Simple fact is that they will release what details they want, when they want, IF they want. Other labels dont release full details, unless its in a trade magazine....so Im thinking this one shouldnt be headline news either. The whole "putting the artist first" thing may or may not change or shift. Major labels are not known for that kind of attitude....if you arent up to the par THEY think you should be....the "do we keep or drop" meetings begin (Jude himself experienced that). For them, its a simple matter of dollars or bottom line...what kind of money can you make for them and how. Its called record BUSINESS, not record CODDLING.

I must be living in a bubble or completely missing something as I have no idea what y'all be talking about!!! i.e. I don't know the 'news' That said I agree with MKK that I don't feel it's up to us to influence how Ironworks run their business. Objectives and strategies change as market and situations change. And it is a business.... not a charity. I am sure no decision has been made lightly or without due consideration of the artists.

OK. Just got caught up cos I eventually got round to reading myspace blogs and saw Judes.
He calls them 'partners' which is different (IMO) to 'merger'
Also, it states that which makes it sound like it is on an 'artist by artist' basis.
I believe they would only do this for the benefit of the artist and the business and they know what they're doing! ;D

Interesting I am all for it getting the word out about IW's great artists in a bigger way and I guess they are working on one band at a time means that ....... hang on ....... does it mean hh is coming out first and holding up RDB ............. OK so one band at a times means they are still looking after each artist individually. Hopefully it frees IW up to make great music and Universal Republic will concentrate on helping with the promotion side.

Hopefully it frees IW up to make great music and Universal Republic will concentrate on helping with the promotion side. Oh I like that, good thinking.
